…the Tulsa Tough Brady Crit Cat V 35+ race due to Bob’s Pickle Pops!
One thing I’ve learned as an avid cyclist is that hard efforts, whether climbing or racing, can cause painful and persistent cramps in my legs. I have also learned that pickle juice can prevent the onset of cramps, or make them disappear when they do occur. During my 4 century rides last year; I continually looked forward to pickle juice at rest stops. I found it to be one of the few liquids I could get down 80-90 miles into a 100-mile ride. It was also invaluable when the twinges of impending cramps started making me suffer through those last, long, miles.
I was pleasantly surprised when this year, on the Flower Power Bike Ride in Muskogee, OK, one of the rest stops offered Bob’s Pickle Pops. Here, at last, was a convenient way to carry pickle juice with me instead of hoping it was available at the next rest stop. I immediately consumed one, grabbed three more for my jersey pockets, and completed that ride with ease, consuming my private stash of pickle juice on the bike as needed; before, during, or after the hardest parts of the ride. I was so impressed with the product that I ordered a case as soon as I got home from the ride.
This year I started racing for 360 Sports, a start up team from a local bike shop. I most recently participated in, and won the Tulsa Tough Brady Crit Cat V 35+ race. While warming up on the trainer before the race, I had a Pickle Pop. With half a lap to go in the race, I uncorked a surprising sprint attack and opened a gap the field couldn’t close. An effort like that would normally have me locked up in painful cramps. Instead, I felt absolutely great and was able to celebrate the victory with my teammates, family, and friends.
The story doesn’t end there, though. Two nights later, I was wakened from my sleep with a severe cramp in my lower left leg, no doubt a remnant of the massive effort I poured into that winning sprint. No amount of rubbing or stretching would ease the cramp. I finally went to my stash of Bob’s Pickle Pops, downed one, and as I reached the end of the Pickle Pop, the cramps completely subsided and didn’t come back. I slept peacefully the rest of the night.
I have several more major events on my cycling calendar this year, and you can bet there will be Pickle Pops in my jersey pockets.
